Being the builder that introduced the Hamptons look to Australia, you could say we have a very
good understanding on how we create and diversify this now extremely popular style.

The Hamptons Style

The builder that introduced the Hamptons look to Australia

We sent our two senior designers to visit the seaside villages and hamlets that hug the coast along South East fork of Long Island that make up the Hamptons, so they could to see the architecture firsthand and to determine if we could recreate a similar style to suit our Australian climate and lifestyle. When we launched our first Hamptons inspired display in 2014 and today, it’s apparent that the Hamptons style has taken Australia by storm and the best place to see its multiple incarnations, is at one of our Porter Davis displays.

The architecture of the communities along the eastern beaches of Long Island New York make up the Hamptons and the houses have a look that is distinctly their own. It’s all about being modern, classic, cool and welcoming.

What makes a Hamptons Home?

Exterior

From the outside the weatherboard look and a gabled roof is what sets the Hamptons beachside homes apart. When it comes to colour some people prefer the classic off-white look for the whole exterior but the more popular option is grey with white gloss trim. Utilising two varying shades of grey, sometimes even a deeper charcoal, is a developing trend as it helps to give an eye-catching modern take on the overall theme.

What makes a Hamptons Home?

Interior

The traditional interior palette uses the fresh and airy whites and creams as its base with the use natural textures such as linen or cottons, ocean inspired blues and freshly painted white, sand or cream walls with timber wall panelling. The introduction of pastel hues such as mint, lemon and blush can also be used to compliment the traditional subtle grey, blue and white palette.

The heart of a Hamptons home

Hamptons-style Kitchens

Like all most family homes, the kitchen becomes the hub, the place where everyone comes together.
This is the place of food entertaining and casual conversations.

Sophisticated and refined

Hamptons kitchens feature a large open plan living, which incorporates ease of access to family and dining areas. Light coloured stone bench tops with grey or blue veins atop shaker style cabinetry create a sophisticated workspace.

Primarily off-white finishes are used for kitchen cabinetry but it should be noted that there has been a trend towards darker finishes to create a more dramatic and contemporary feel. Glass paned higher cabinet doors, subway tiled or marble splashbacks and an island bench with stools are part of the overall look, as are oversized pendant or lantern style lights in shiny chrome or glass finish.

Hamptons-style Bathrooms

Hamptons-style bathrooms are classic, elegant and timeless. The choice is yours, some like the look of
subway wall tiles, while others choose large format ceiling to floor tiles to create a sense of spaciousness.

Elegant details

Stone bench tops and shaker style cabinetry are complimented with often ornate chrome or nickel plated handles. Decorative mirrors are the centre piece of the bathroom and can be quite impressive; these are embellished even further by being framed by sconce lighting on either side.

Some people prefer a modern take on the classical, there is no right or wrong - just whatever suits your lifestyle. The traditional vintage Hamptons-style utilises ornate country style tapware and to complete the look, you could even consider a claw-foot bath.
