Reaching for the stars – Six Star Energy explained

6 May 2011 - 5 min read

You could already be a green, energy efficient savvy consumer but what about the house you live in?

You might already have energy efficient light bulbs but unfortunately that doesn’t necessarily make your home a green home.

As of May 1, 2011 all new and renovated homes in Victoria must be Six Star Energy Rated.

Look to the stars

  • Star ratings are out of 10 meaning Victoria is well on its way to leading the Australian housing market with a six star rating.
  • Not only will each and every home buyer and builder be contributing to energy saving concepts, new home buyers will benefit from ongoing energy consumption costs.
  • While Six Star homes don’t take into account every fitting and fixture, they must use 25% less energy for heating and cooling as a result of the orientation of the building, window size and glazing, plus draught proofing, hot water system efficiency and low energy lighting. This means ongoing cost savings for you.
  • The government has also committed $60 million to bring government buildings, schools and hospitals up to the same high standard, with an additional $5 million provided for training to assist tradespeople in meeting the new Six Star standard.

Thankfully, at Porter Davis the Six Star Energy Rating hasn’t affected our new home prices, but is a positive as it gives buyers the opportunity to have a more energy conscious home.
